Hernando, M.P..
The increments in the ultraviolet radiation B (RUVB, 280-320 nm) resultants of the destruction of the ozone layer affect diverse echo-physiologic aspects of the marine phytoplankton. On this study were compared the responses of phytoplankton from an ambient Sub-Antarctic (Channel Beagle, 54º 52´S, 68º 18´W) and another Antarctic (Potter Cove, 62º 14´S, 58º 38´W) to the ultraviolet radiation (RUV). The decrease of the photosynthesis on short term (hours) was observed in both places, however inhibition thresholds were present. In the Beagle Channel, these were for RUVB and ultraviolet radiation A (RUVA, 320-400 nm), respectively, 0,2 and 6,2 Wm-2 for communities with more than 70% diatoms and 0,45 and 14,2 Wm-2, respectively, for communities with more than...

Effects of solar UV radiation on photosynthesis and enzyme activities (carbonic anhydrase and nitrate reductase) in marine macroalgae from southern Spain RChHN
FIGUEROA,FÉLIX L.; VIÑEGLA,BENJAMÍN.
The effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation during daily cycles on photosynthesis and two key enzymes involved in carbon incorporation, the carbonic anhydrase, and in inorganic nitrogen reduction, the nitrate reductase, of macroalgae from southern Spain are presented. During daily cycles, photoinhibition in several intertidal macroalgae, expressed as decrease in the effective quantum yield from the morning to noon time, was linearly dependent on the daily integrated irradiance. However, recovery, expressed as the increase in the effective quantum yield from noon to the afternoon, presented a different pattern; full recovery was found below daily integrated irradiance of 1.0 x10(4) kJ m-2. However, recovery reached only 50 % at higher irradiances. The...

Evaluation of ultraviolet radiation to control microorganisms adhering to low-density polyethylene films BJM
Silva,Cleuber Antonio de Sá; Andrade,Nélio José de; Soares,Nilda de Fátima Ferreira; Ferreira,Sukarno Olavo.
Efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in reducing the cell number of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli K-12 adhered to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films was evaluated. The microorganisms were let to adhere to the surface of LPDE bags for 12h at 18ºC, and then submitted to UV radiation at an intensity 196 µW.cm-2, 254nm, for 2 seconds. Staphylococcus aureus was less resistant to UV radiation than E. coli, and the efficiency increased with the increase of the concentration of microbial suspension. After 1500 hours of use the UV radiation intensity of the lamp was reduced from 288 to 78 µW.cm-2, and the higher decrease occurred in the first 100 hours of use. Also, the efficiency of the UV radiation decreased after 1500 hours of use....

Low-level red laser therapy alters effects of ultraviolet C radiation on Escherichia coli cells BJMBR
Canuto,K.S.; Sergio,L.P.S.; Guimarães,O.R.; Geller,M.; Paoli,F.; Fonseca,A.S..
Low-level lasers are used at low power densities and doses according to clinical protocols supplied with laser devices or based on professional practice. Although use of these lasers is increasing in many countries, the molecular mechanisms involved in effects of low-level lasers, mainly on DNA, are controversial. In this study, we evaluated the effects of low-level red lasers on survival, filamentation, and morphology of Escherichia colicells that were exposed to ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation. Exponential and stationary wild-type and uvrA-deficient E. coli cells were exposed to a low-level red laser and in sequence to UVC radiation. Bacterial survival was evaluated to determine the laser protection factor (ratio between the number of viable cells after...

Stability and Persistence of Two Formulations Containing Anticarsia gemmatalis Nuclear Polyhedrovirus (AgMNPV) Neotropical Entomology
BATISTA FILHO,ANTONIO; ALVES,SÉRGIO B.; AUGUSTO,NILSON T.; PEREIRA,ROBERTO M.; ALVES,LUIS F.A..
The stability and the persistence of two AgMNPV formulations developed by the Instituto Biológico and the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil were studied. Formulations were stored in environmental conditions and exposed to ultraviolet radiation in laboratory and to solar radiation in the field. The wettable powder formulation (WP) was prepared by impregnating viral suspensions + adjuvants on inert mineral, chiefly kaolin. The emulsifiable oil formulation (EO) was prepared by mixing the pathogen suspension with corn oil + adjuvants. At 120-day intervals for 20 months, samples of formulations and the standard treatment (crude virus) kept in a laboratory cabinet were added to artificial diet fed to 4th-instar...

Traitement de l''eau par ultraviolets, application a la purification des coquillages ArchiMer
Cailleres, J.
The germicide properties of ultra-violet radiation in a wave length ranging from 100 to 400 mm were already discovered back in the late 19th century. These properties specific to UV-C radiation (200-280 mm) result from its action on the nucleic acids of the micro-organisms. Each micro-organism, depending on its composition, therefore presents a specific sensitivity to this radiation.

2-fold higher in the <20 kDa fraction than in the bulk DOM. These results clearly indicate that initially bioreactive DOM can be rendered biologically more recalcitrant by exposure to solar radiation, while DOM of initially low bioavailability can be, at least partly, photochemically transformed to compounds of higher biological reactivity.

UV-B radiation as an elicitor of secondary metabolite production in plants of the genus Alternanthera Acta Botanica
Klein,Fátima Rosane S.; Reis,Andressa; Kleinowski,Alítcia M.; Telles,Renata T.; Amarante,Luciano do; Peters,José A.; Braga,Eugenia Jacira B..
ABSTRACT Ultraviolet B radiation has been described as a potential elicitor agent of the synthesis of secondary metabolites in plants. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the production of betalains and total flavonoids, as well as the antioxidant activity, of Alternanthera sessilis, A. brasiliana, A. tenella and A. philoxeroides exposed to different periods of UV-B radiation (280-315 nm). Plants of these four species were exposed to UV-B radiation for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours, which amounts to 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 J cm−2 of radiation, respectively. Significant increases in betacyanin and betaxanthin levels were observed in A. sessilis and A. brasiliana during the period of UV-B exposure, while no differences were observed for the others species....
